I'm not sure that we actually have to construct the full short story, but if this is something that you decided to take to your own liberty, here is some advice:
Make sure all of your margins are even. There are many times where the text goes to the middle of the spread, but not in the others. I would also give more space in the middle of the spread. If you were to fold them the way they are now, you would have text all in that middle gutter therefor rendering it illegible.
This can be solved by making a quick template in InDesign or Illustrator, and then inserting your text accordingly. I would advise you to look up Van De Graaf grid system. It is a template of proportional measurements used mainly in illuminated manuscripts. It provides margin spacing that makes the page easy on the eye.
Also, all books start on the right page. Open up any book and you will notice this. Odd pages on the right, even on the left. So, the spread with your first illustration on it should be on the right side, and the left side should be blank. You could then utilize this space for your illustration. Another thing about book constructing is also making sure that no line ends with a word preceding a comma or an article adjective.
For your cover, I would scrap Papyrus. Papyrus is a generic, over used font, and your design should be something individual. Also, the kerning and ligatures on it are terrible. A typeface shouldn't be the last thing you consider in a design.
